Construction Reports

    January 2009

We seem to have let this page lapse -- in the past year we have wrapped up our sixth house and begun construction on our seventh. Click the Our Current House link to keep up-to-date.

    December 2008

    Framing is underway

    November 2008

    Construction commenced on house #6

    May 19th, 2008

The house is essentially complete!! A dedication ceremony for the new homes and their new owners will be held on-site on Saturday, June 14th at 2pm, and everyone is invited to attend!

    April 29th, 2008

Brad Chamberlain: Today was the cold, sleety day after the previous weekend had been uncannily in the 80's, but five brave UPC volunteers showed up to work. Things are wrapping up with the house, so one group worked on painting the interiors of the duplex while a second worked on landscaping.

    December 6th, 2007

Ron Thompson: Today we put siding up on the back side of the duplex, but did not finish. Some cut while others worked on the scaffolding. Still others put locks on the doors to protect the (expensive) copper pipe that the plumbers had installed.

    November 16th, 2007

Ron Thompson: It rained hard today. Thanks to the roofing on the duplex the week before, we were dry. We put insulation in the two bathrooms and dry-wall on them. Others put doors on, put more infrastructure in. The big event was a Thanksgiving feast. One volunteer cooked the turkey and everyone else brought food. It was a feast! Worked a couple hours after eating. Not easy.

    November 1st, 2007

Ron Thompson: We got lots of work done today. Some put the columns together; others put the wraps on the carriage house; and some of us put supports under the roof overhangs. Later we put wood up for fireproofing between the homes in the attics of the duplex. Roofers come tomorrow so we all worked late to be prepared.

    October 4th, 2007

Ron Thompson: We framed the third floor of the duplex and couldn't quit when 4pm came. Put up three walls and framed one closet, and left one wall and the closet for the Friday group to put up.

    September 20th, 2007

Ron Thompson: We worked on the duplex today and finished framing and putting the girdirs in to support the second floor. Tomorrow, the second floor flooring can be put in. The support fence was put up and the stairway is ready for the stairs. Again I am struck by how fast the homes go up in framing. It slows down after that.

    August 9th, 2007

Ron Thompson: Today we poured the floors to the duplex and the carriage house garages. It was a full day of cement work shoveling and troweling. Tomorrow they will put up the base boards on the foundation. Then the walls.

    August 2nd, 2007

Ron Thompson: This week, we spent some time finishing up details on the previous duplex and triplex to prepare for the dedication: sidewalks were poured and decorated, plants were planted, the units were cleaned, and finishing touches were added.

    July 26th, 2007

Ron Thompson: The day began with low fog which was great to work in. A group came from Home Street Bank and they brought food, energy, and commitment.  Some worked on making a wooden fence, some cleaned up the two places, some picked up rocks in the back yard, put in top soil and chips, some put trees and plants in, and some put dirt on the new duplex so the floor pour can be put in. The duplex and carriage houses cannot put walls up until the electric and plumbing checks are OK'ed and today that happened.

    June 14th, 2007

Ron Thompson: We put up boards for the upper foundation of the third building which will be poured next Thursday. Some put the drain pipes around the fourth building.

    April 20th, 2007

Ron Thompson: Both the duplex and triplex have their exterior painting completed. Volunteers worked on painting the inside, putting trim in, and getting ready for carpet. The site for the second duplex and single cottage house is clear and it looks like foundations will begin soon.

    January 5th, 2007

Ron Thompson: We put siding on the north side of the triplex. The east side is already done. We also put up one sheet metal exhaust pipe in one room of the triplex.

    November 10th, 2006

Ron Thompson: The roof is on the triplex, but not on the duplex which has a much steeper roof. We put the wrapping on the outside, put the doors in the right place, and two windows.
